Blue Mountain Peak

Blue Mountain Peak, being the highest peak in all of jamaica, at 2,256 meters tall, gathers quite the buzz from tourists and hikers. Located on the border of the Portland and Saint Thomas parishes, in the south east, it is known the world over, in one way or another. For locals it’s known as a beautiful, but arduous, hike, frequently undertaken before dawn to see daybreak. In the early mornings, through the clear Jamaican sky, you can see Cuba. For the international audiences though, it is known for its drinks. It is the birthplace of Blue Mountain Coffee. Small coffee farming communities, such as Claverty Cottage and Hagley Gap are located near the peak. Due to the high altitude and low temperatures most plants find the area uninhabitable. That causes unique flora in the area to be unique and can be found nearly nowhere else in the world.  A couple popular birds in the area would be the Male Jamaican Spindalis and the Arrowhead warbler, both of which are endemic to jamaica. In summation of all that has been stated previously, Blue Mountain Peak is quite important for several reasons. The tourist attraction, the industrial value of the coffee, and of course as a place to come and see the sunrise.
